Observation and Feedback Skills for Language Teacher Supervisors
This is a short term course developed by the Modern Institute to develop the observation and feedback skills of those who need to observe teachers and provide them feedback as a part of their work. It is appropriate for School Directors, Senior Teachers, Teacher Trainers, and anyone else who wants to become a more helpful and supportive classroom observer.
METHODOLOGY
The course is based on the concept of experiential learning, formulated by David Kolb. There is complex research and theory behind the specific model we use on the course; in essence though, it is based on "learning by doing" or "hands on" learning, and learning from reflection - seeing what went right or was not successful in your own and your peers' performance, and planning future action based on the new insight gained from previous experience.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- identify the main purposes of providing observation and feedback to practicing language teachers;
- use a variety of qualitative and quantitative measurement techniques for observing and evaluating teachers’ performance;
- use a variety of effective and affective techniques for giving appropriate feedback to teachers after observations;
- and, articulate a set of consistent criteria for evaluating the success of a language teacher’s lesson.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
The training takes place over 5 days and is 40 hours in total. Each day involves approximately 8 hours of contact time for the participants. Here is a summary of the daily schedule:
