Introduction to Communicative Methodology for High School and University Teachers of English
This is an in-service teacher training course, for non-native speaker English teachers serving in the public / state sector, conducted in cooperation with Sofia University Department of Information and In-service Training of Teachers. Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of communicative methodology and student-centered teaching, and have the opportunity to put these ideas into practice in their own classrooms through a series of "experiments" that act as a link between the course input and the teachers' real world teaching context. The trainers will also observe one lesson at the teacher's workplace, and provide feedback afterwards.
Course Length:
40 hours, as follows:
- Input sessions - 24 hours
- Observed lesson and feedback - 2 hours
- Online component and other homework - 14 hours
Course Dates and Time:
This course was first successfully run in Winter 2008.
Our next course will be held in Fall 2009.
Entrance Requirements:
- The course is delivered in English. In the course application and screening interview, applicants must demonstrate a level of English sufficient to be able to fully participate in the coursework. (B2 on the Common European Framework or above).
- There are a limited number of positions available (maximum class size 12 participants). In the course application and screening interview, applicants must demonstrate an interest in teaching and a desire to grow and improve as teachers.
- There is a practical component to the course, so applicants must be currently employed as English teachers in the Sofia region, and be able to invite the course trainers into their classrooms for observation and feedback.
Course Fees:
- For state and public school teachers we offer this course at a subsidized low course fee of 30 Leva, plus 6 Leva fee for the official certificate.

After reviewing your application, we will contact you to arrange for a face to face interview at The Modern Institute. If you are then accepted we will offer you a position on the course. Your place on the course will be reserved for you once we have received course fee.
